How to Override "No Ink" Error on a Canon PIXMA MX700

When a Canon PIXMA MX700 runs out of any ink, it prevents you from using it, giving the following error message:

U163: The following ink has run out. Replace the ink tank.
This can be a pain, especially when you want to scan, or if you still have black ink and that's all you need to use. There are two methods that will work to temporarily clear this until you are able to get new ink (which, by the way, is much, much cheaper if you use generic brands). These may also work for other Canon printers, but I haven't tried it. (Update: one or both methods have been confirmed to work on several Canon PIXMA models, including the JX210P, MG5220, MG5270, MG5470, MG6320, MP220, MP280, MP470, MP495, MP560, MP620, MP640, MP970, MP980, MX310, MX882, and MX885; more information might be in the comments. Thanks for the info!)

The first method uses the printer's "factory mode". There are some interesting settings in here, but I'm not sure of what everything does, so be careful with them. This works temporarily (as it seems to reset after a few days), and does not permanently disable ink level detection (as it correctly showed full ink after replacing it):
  1. Unplug the printer.
  2. Press and hold the Power button while plugging the printer back in.
  3. Continue to hold the Power button and press the Reset button twice.
  4. Let go of the Power button and wait 10 seconds. It will eventually show the number 1 on the LCD.
  5. Once the printer also shows "Idle" on the screen, cycle through the settings with the left and right arrow buttons until you see "USER MODE POWER OFF". Press the OK button.
  6. You should now be able to print or scan.
The second method is to simply press and hold the Stop/Reset button for at least five seconds. I didn't find this solution for a while because it's buried deep in the Canon KB, and haven't before used it. Be forewarned that Canon claims this stops the printer from detecting ink levels (I'm not sure if it means for the specific cartridge or as a printer setting).

Is there a way to do that on a Lexmark Interact S605

I'm not sure. I don't have one to play with, nor did I find anything online at a brief glance. You may try searching for the exact error message.

No worries! To recap, it works on several PIXMA models, including the MX700, MG5270, and MP970, from what's been reported.

Greetings,

This method works great! However, I have encountered another problem, whenever I print an image or document, it doesnt print correctly, words or images are printed such that there are blank spots in between the image or text and im currently only using the black ink cartridge.

Please help, many thanks in advance.

Araignée said...

As far as blank spots, that sounds like either a software or hardware issue instead of a direct ink issue. I'd suggest contacting Canon on that. Best of luck!

First reset method used and worked on MP640, thanks very much!

I tried it but it says Factory Mode 1 on the screen but it just sits there now and it won't do anything else. It did not say IDLE so I could go further. HELP PLEASE

Araignée said...

@Geraldine:

What model of printer do you have? To get it back to normal, you should be able to simply unplug it and plug it back in.

That being said, while it's on Factory Mode, can you navigate left and right?

Anonymous said...

Holding down the stop/reset button for 5 seconds worked great on my MX700.

Khoa L said...

Pressed and held STOP on my MP620. THANKS!!!!

Anonymous said...

used method 2... THANKS!!!

andreas said...

confirm 2nd method works on MX885 as well

it now ignores the specific ink tank that it thinks is empty. it may still give you additional error messages about ink tanks that *may* be empty. Those cannot be sidestepped through the 5seconds stop button method, but this time a simple ok works.

is this greed or incompetency on canon's part? you decide.

Araignée said...

Thanks for this...I've updated the post!

I have "Error 5200" on my Cannon Pixma MX700. Tried both of your fixes. No. 2 did nothing. No. 1 leaves me with "Factory Mode 1 on screen and I am not able to navigate with right and left arrows.
Personally I think this whole thing is both greed and incompetency on Cannon's Part. I have wasted many phone calls and much time trying to get someone at Cannon to tell me how to override this error message. I have been told by several sources that Cannon has these printers preset to stop working after a preset number of copies are printed. A service tech actually told me that he might be able to totally reset the software on my printer to start the copy count again at zero, but it could only be reset one time.
I paid for this printer with good ole American cash--and it is mine, so it seams to me that a company doing something like this just to make me buy a new printer should at some point be illegal.
If ingredients have to be listed on foods that I buy, at some point shouldn't there be a similar law governing a machine that I buy.
I just hope that you might be able to help me get past this error message and be able to use my printer again.

Araignée said...

I've not seen this error, but did find this with Google:

http://www.justanswer.com/printers/51t60-cannon-pixma-mx700-getting-error-code-5200.html

If that doesn't help, I suggest contacting Canon and asking them to reset the printer. I'd avoid using the steps in this article for any errors beyond the one specified, as it may result in other issues.

Just tried both methods with MX700 - neither worked. Method 1 (unplugging) gave "Factory Mode 1" with all further button inputs disabled. Method 2 did nothing.

Note: my cartridge has been removed several times prior to trying these methods . . maybe they only work if the error message is "fresh?"

Anonymous said...

This also worked for the Pixma MX882 - just hold down the stop button and you will be able to scan etc.

Thanks for the solution!

@Anonymous (Jan 3): I've used it on old cartridges and new ones, as well as on the same one multiple times. Not sure what to tell you on that, sorry!

MX700 here, but I believe it's been treated to a firmware update since I bought it. I'm also using generic (G&G) carts, which are just fine for plain paper (glossy photo paper, not so much.)

I'm getting a somewhat different message: "The ink may have run out. Replacing the ink tank is recommended." (W/ a red X over the yellow tank icon.)

Sounds like a mere suggestion . . . except that it won't print, or even scan(!?) Holding down Stop/Reset has no effect, but the first method did the trick. Thanks for the hint - that's one hell of an obscure process!

Sloppy programming on Canon's part, IMO; the obvious thing is for the user to indicate "OK", as in "OK, I got the message, thank you." And not scanning because of low ink is preposterous.

Weirdness like this aside, I do love the printer. My main complaint is with the MP Navigator software for the Mac OS: from what godforsaken corner of DOS Hell did they exhume a 20-character limit on file names?????

oh i have just encountered the same problem, printer was working totally fine before, but now this... pathetic... gonna try everything i can to reset it... if it doesn't work, fuck you canon

Araignée said...

@Jim Demers: I haven't updated any firmware since this post, so I've not seen that message. I agree, though, that it's sloppy programming to not allow one to "continue" without jumping through undocumented hoops. Regarding MP Navigator, I can't say I've used it, as OS X seems to handle the scanning natively already. I've learned it's best to avoid installing any of the bloatware the manufacturer provides unless absolutely necessary.

@ShadowVlican: I'm not familiar with that error myself, but if you find a solution, let me know!

Fix #1--> I use this one when I need to print 'things' that take some time between jobs... It works like a charm to print for a few days then the 'fix #1' process would need to be executed again to last for a few more days. <--

Fix #2--> This one I use only if I need to print 1 thing or several things at the same time. Stays ready to print for about 3 minutes before I have to press the reset button to print some more. <--

***Using MP495-After initial 'Ink Tank Empty' message appears on my computer screen, I can use the same cartridges for at least 50 more pages. After that, I can still use them but the color starts to fade so I set it to use all of the colors, but to print in black and white. Works great!***

*^*^*Just wondering*^*^*I just wonder if ink cartridge companies apply this setting just to make their customers purchase more ink from them. Many of them have a nice incentive of giving a small discount to customers who recycle their cartridges. They even including a postage paid envelope for 'empty' cartridges *(Which they, no doubt, recycle/refill to re-sell them as 'refurbished' at an even more discounted price. Knowing good and well that there is plenty of ink left after the sensor tells the computer that it is empty. Ugh!)* I am in the wrong business! haha*^*^*

Neither methods worked on a Canon MX885. The first method froze the printer and the second method made it think that every cartridge is empty instead of just one.

Second method worked for MG 6220. I simply wanted to quickly print a plain black and white document, but the printer would not let me because my cyan tank was apparently empty...though I'm not sure exactly how since I almost NEVER print in color. But anyway, thank you so much. In related news, I hate this printer. I would not recommend to my worst enemy.

Anonymous said...

Used the second method - hold down stop button for five seconds on a MG3520. I installed a remanufactured cartridge but the printer said the ink level was low and then after a few pages of printing it would not print any more. I phoned Canon customer service twice and both times they said the cartridge had a chip in it that told the computer when the ink cartridge had run out so even though the cartridge was full it was still getting the "run out" message from the chip. I was told the only way round the problem was to buy a Canon product. They could not guarantee a remanufactured or generic product. Thank you so much and think this information should be made widely available

Thanks for listing these instructions. I'm guessing they should work for my Pixma (an MP980) based on comments above, but I can't get them to. I take the reset button to be the upside down red triangle. When I try method 1, all that happens is the blue power light stays on and nothing else happens. When I try holding the red triangle down for 5 seconds nothing at all happens. Tried 10 seconds and nothing happens there either. Can't see any other button that might be reset. Only trying to scan while a cartridge is empty.

We had the MX890 and we had to hold down the Stop button for at least 15 seconds and it felt closer to 20, but at that time the error related to the empty cartridge stopped and we could use the scanner again. There's no reason IMO if you just want to scan, that it should be blocked by ink levels.
